November 2016 Meeting

We’re joining in with NaNoWriMo this month, so we won’t be in Brogans on the 5th November: we’ll be at Swindon Central Library (Regent Circus, SN1 1QG) from 12 – 3.30.

Even if you’re not participating in NaNo, do come along for some focused
writing time, alongside discussions about which of your characters to hit
with a shovel…

Here’s what NaNoWriMo says:

“Write-ins! The best kind of meet-up in November. Here, you’ll get to
write your novel alongside other Wrimos, discuss how the event is going so
far, and share and receive advice and tips for the month. Coffee, cake,
and other refreshments are available for purchase from the café.

We meet around the back of the café. We’ll have a poster up — and we’ll
be the crowd with laptops and notebooks!”

November 2016: NaNoWriMo

This November, the Swindon Free Writers will be taking part in NaNoWriMo. The aim of National Novel Writing Month is to write 50,000 words in a month – get that first draft down, write the story you’ve always wanted to, and join in with the enthusiasm and chaos of other people all trying to do the same!

The official events and write-ins are listed on the Swindon Forums; as well as write-ins every Saturday in Swindon Library, there’s evening events and online word-sprints on the NaNo site.

Everything kicks off on Sunday 30th October with the Launch Party at Swindon Central Library from 13.00 – 15.00 – hope to see you there!

Wednesday Writing: 3rd February 2016

The idea of Wednesday Writing is to give you a prompt to write…anything! It can be a 100-word story; it can be a poem; it can be the trigger for the next section in your stalled novel; it can be for the plot of your next work. Sit down and write whatever comes out of your head!

This week’s prompt is a phrase: “I shall solve the Mystery of the Startling Murmur!”

February 2016 meeting

The next Swindon Free Writers meeting will be on the 6th February 2016 from 12pm to 3pm.

It will be held in Swindon Central Library in Swindon town centre. We’re shifting location for this month to give everyone a chance to attend, and hopefully be a little more visible than we usually are.

The meeting will also be a part AGM; if you have any suggestions of things you’d like to do, activities you’d like to try, alternative meeting places or other suggestions, please either contact us or bring your thoughts along!

The agenda also includes writing discussions, a chance to talk about what you’ve read recently, and some time to work on your own projects – as well as a chance to meet other Swindon writers.

If you are a current member of SFW, remember to submit any work that you want critiqued to the forums, and mention what kind of critique you are looking for.

Hope to see you there!

Monday Exercise: 18th January 2016

Grumpy Cat bedIt’s Monday morning, and to get you in the writing mood for the week ahead, here’s a writing exercise for you to try.

Today, write a newpaper or Craigslist advert selling a dragon.

And if you fancy a challenge, it’s a dragon who, uh, has a slight…problem. Not a major one, oh no no no! It’s just that he’s a little, well…

Incontinent? Allergic to humans? Sarcastic? Too fond of your fire tongs? Has unfortunately roasted three of the neighbour’s cats, nine squirrels and four pigeons? Is just simply getting too big for your living room?

Have fun!

And Grumpy Cat can be found on Facebook.

Wednesday Writing: 13th January 2016

The idea of Wednesday Writing is to give you a prompt to write…anything! It can be a 100-word story; it can be a poem; it can be the trigger for the next section in your stalled novel; it can be for the plot of your next work. Sit down and write whatever comes out of your head!

This week’s prompt is based on the date. What’s your worst nightmare? What’s your Boggart? What’s your run-away-screaming moment?

Zombies? Spiders? Ghosts? Faint clanks in the night, a footstep when you don’t expect it? A knife-wielding killer at the worst possible moment? Or something more subtle?
